NBA star and New York Knicks power forward, Amar’e Stoudemire, married longtime girlfriend, Alexis Welch, in a private ceremony this past Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The couple chose the unique date, 12-12-12, because they wanted something “spiritual and private for themselves.” The ceremony, which took place on the roof of their New York apartment, revolved around the newlyweds and just 12 guests in honor of the day. Not even his teammates knew he was getting married.

Stoudemire proposed to Welch in early June overlooking the Eiffel tower in Paris. The couple has been dating since 2002 and have three children together. Anxious to share the good news, both Stoudemire and Welch presented tweets and pictures on Instagram shortly after the ceremony took place. A larger event for friends and family is set for summer 2013.

“12.12.12 now has a special & spiritual meaning to us …” Stoudemire shared on the social media site, along with a pic of the pair’s rings.
