1. Avoid using elbow grease… at all costs!
I always tell my teens that if we clean our tubs and toilets weekly, we avoid having to spend a lot of energy scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing. Cleaning a little daily or weekly will help you avoid having to spend a lot of time deep-cleaning.
2. Ban all knick-knacks…for life!
Can I tell you a secret? My mother had knick-knacks. She had figurines and Curio cabinets with lots of glass shelving. It was a dusting nightmare and I vowed never to have knick-knacks as an adult…lol. Do I sound like it scarred me? It did! Anyway, fewer knick-knacks means less dusting and more time enjoying the beautiful spring weather.
3. Get your kids involved as much as you can.
My kids were making beds and putting away toys as toddlers. There are a lot of chores that they can do without using cleaning products or chemicals, per EPA guidelines. For instance, my kids clean our baseboards with a damp cloth, monthly. They make their own beds, fold their own clothes and put their own toys away. And since we are wiping and cleaning on a regular basis, we spend a lot less time doing it on the weekends.
4. Stop lying to yourself…use it or toss it.
If you have not used it or worn it in two years, donate it. You’ve literally passed on wearing that jacket or those boots for two winters in a row…so get rid of it already. Because no…you’re not going to wear it next year. If you follow this rule, you will not spend a lot of time de-cluttering your closets and home when you are spring cleaning.
5. Throw out old-school rules.
Old-school rules will have you cleaning all day long. And who has time for that? So whenever possible, combine steps.
