Rock-T from the Rickey Smiley Morning Radio Show and His Wife Talk Private Dances, Being a Slave and More

Better known as Rock-T, radio personality Rocky Turner has one of the toughest jobs in America. As a co-host on the Rickey Smiley Morning Radio Show, Rock-T is charged with one of the show’s most anticipated, high-pressure, nail biting moments—the now infamous Joke of the Day.

Okay, for those of you who don’t listen to the show, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But for the Dish Nation star, the pressure to be funny among the likes of Rickey Smiley himself might be a legitimate stressor.

Yet, when it comes to real pressure, we think Rock-T’s wife Krystal holds the bigger burden. I mean what girl can honestly do her best seductive bedroom dance when her husband always laughs right in her face…

Krystal: Okay, so I’m really not the best dancer of all times. But I try to break it down for him in the bedroom. I will start breaking it down for him, and then he will start saying, “Work it, work it, work it”, but laugh at the same time. [laughs] Now how am I supposed to keep my sexy bedroom dance going with him laughing?

BMWK: So, Rock-T, on a scale of 1 to 10, how do you grade her on her dancing?

Rock-T: Dancing-wise, well, it’s a 10 because when we’re swinging out [editor’s note: that’s like Texas’s answer to Chicago steppin]. She’s pretty fly….When she’s doing any kind of hip-hop dance or anything else, that’s when it goes straight downhill. But, the dancing that she was talking about is in the bedroom, that’s the reason I start laughing is because of her facial expressions. And, you know, it’s cute. It’s sexy, but cute at the same time.

BMWK: So, Rock-T, you get a good laugh on her behalf. But is there an area where your wife likes to make fun of you?

Rock-T: She tickles me when she imitates me. She’s always looking for an opportunity to imitate me in front of my friends, in front of her friends… She’s got a real funny sense of humor about her. She probably can do some comedy, some stand-up.

Krystal: Yeah, no

BMWK: So speaking of stand-up performances, we heard about this King Kong reenactment? What’s that about?

Rock-T: Ain’t nothing wrong with role playing. I would leave the bedroom and, of course, Krystal would pretend like she’s the white lady in King Kong. And I’ll put my little King Kong mask on and my furry hands. And then I don’t come into the room until she screams and calls for me, which is, “Kong!” And when she calls for Kong, that’s when I come in the room and save her.

Krystal: Oh my God, I can’t believe he’s saying this (laughs)

Rock-T: Hey, man. You gotta have fun…It’s like you have to keep fun in your marriage or in your relationship. The same thing that you did to get the person, you have to keep doing it. And then you have to create some more new [stuff].

BMWK: How else do you keep the romance alive?

Krystal: I definitely try my best to keep my looks different. He always tells people that, “I feel like I’m cheating on my wife every time I come home because she has a different look.” I just do that because I want to keep it up-to-date. I want him to know that I’m still that woman he felt was so beautiful when he met [me] the first time.

BMWK: So what’s the typical date night for you two?

Rock-T: We’ll go have dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. Then we’ll go have a movie night [but] depending on what time it is, always, one of us falls asleep at the movie.

Krystal: Not one. No, it’s never me. It is always him. He will go straight to sleep, and then look at me like, “Oh, I was sleep like only three seconds.” I’m like, “You slept half the movie!”

Rock-T: So, you know, the typical dinner-movie. Sometimes, we’ll go out dancing. We’re still learning how to swing out better. We’ve gotten a lot better than we used to. Swinging out is kind of a hobby of ours, so we’ll go out dancing for about an hour. You know, we both love sports, so we’ll go to the bar and watch the game or whatever—little stuff like that. And then, of course, the staycation stuff is a date night.

BMWK: Rickey Smiley and the morning show cast always make fun of you guys for being too lovey-dovey with the P.D.A. and matching shirts. How much of that is true?

Rock-T: Guilty

Krystal: I wouldn’t say just the same exact shirts. They’re going overboard with that. But I kind of want us to wear the same colors.

Rock-T: You heard that she said she wants us to…(laughs)

BMWK: …so does this apply to an average outing to the mall? Or is this like an official date to the theater or something? How far does this go?

Rock-T: All of the above—even when it comes to going to our kids’ games.

Krystal: At one of our kid’s games, we both wore our Adidas jumpsuits, which I thought was cute. We had one parent say, “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same thing as my wife. If I saw she had on the same thing, I would go and change.”

Rock-T: Our Adidas jumpsuits are like identical almost.

Krystal: But he’s a good team player. He doesn’t mind doing that and showing the affection; that’s just something he’s a natural at. He’s always been willing to hold my hand and love on me.

Rock-T: Oh, yeah. Hey, happy wife, happy life.

BMWK: You have two teenage daughters. What do you think your daughters are learning about love and relationships by watching yours?

Rock-T: They see every single day how a man’s supposed to treat a woman. So they’ll know what kind of man to marry or to look for…Because they’ve seen their father love their mother, respect their mother and take care of their mother. If they see that with their own eyes, they’ll know what to look for.

Krystal:  I try to show them how to take care of your husband once you have your husband. They would always ask me, “Why do you cook all the time and then make his plate? Why do you always have to pack his suitcase? Why do you always have to make sure everything’s together?” I respond, “Because he does his part as a man and a husband, taking care of this household, me and you kids.”

I know a lot of other women would think that being a submissive wife means being a slave. Guess what? I’m not his slave! Being a submissive wife is not saying I’m supposed to be his slave. It’s just me showing that I appreciate him the way God would want me to do according to his will, and I don’t mind doing it. One thing that I realized about being married is, if I do my best to please my God and do things according to his will, naturally I will please my husband.

What’s the couple up to next?
