Sasheer Zamata has been honing her comedic skills with the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York while producing and starring in her own sketch comedy routines floating around the Internet. Zamata will make her Saturday Night Live debut as their newest cast member when the new season starts on January 18.
The University of Virginia graduate joins the cast following the departure of Maya Rudolph, the show’s last black female lead, six years ago. While debate stirred as to why SNL had not yet added more diversity to its cast, Zamata’s name was among those who auditioned to receive a callback. Her web series with Nicole Byer, Pursuit of Sexiness, is among her most recent performances.
