Spoiler Alert: Review-Why Did I Get Married Too

As opposed to the first film which seems to answer the question “Why Did I get Married”, the sequel seems to ask “Why would anyone ever get married?” If I were to go by the marriages that I saw in this film my answer might be “No one really should”.

I know that a movie about four couples that were happy for the whole film with no conflict whatsoever would likely make for a boring film to watch. But in the original version of the movie, Tyler Perry was able to show some of the trials of married life while still leaving the audience with a message that felt like a positive answer to the question “Why Did I Get Married?”. In “Why Did I Get Married Too” , the relationships that seemed to be headed in a positive direction at the end of the original have disintegrated into insanity in the sequel. Without giving too much of the movie away, in my opinion there is only one couple that is operating on a strong foundation but having problems. The others either seem like they should have never gotten married in the first place or like they are living in divorce-worthy conditions without making any real effort to make a positive change.

It’s not that I found the movie itself to be terrible. Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) were hilarious as a couple and both Janet Jackson (Patricia) and Malik Yoba (Gavin) were able to go to a realistic if not scary place on the screen in dealing with loss. But overall I have to say that I was disappointed by the sequel. In an attempt to sacrifice what led viewers to be able to relate in the first place for over-the-top drama, the answer to the question “Why Did I get Married?” seems to get lost.

Have you seen the movie? What did you think?
