The Great Steak Cook-Off!

The Challenge:

Grill a Steak to Perfection!

The Challengers:

Lamar & Ronnie Tyler

The Background:

We had the opportunity to try our Walmart’s USDA Choice steaks for a grilling competition. I picked up two T-Bone steaks from our local Walmart store. We decided that we would cook both at the same time then give the kids a hidden taste test (otherwise they would choose Mommy no matter what) and see the results. Here’s how it went down:

I picked up two steaks that were pretty evenly sized and we were off to the races.

Pregame:

I chose to just grill a great steak. If done properly a good steak doesn’t need a ton of flavoring, seasoning etc… I added some salt, pepper and steak seasoning to go for a simple and classic taste.

Ronnie on the other hand cheated by drowning her steak in marinade. What type of cook off are you having when one person drowns their steak in marinade?

Grill Time:

We hit the grill at the same time. After a minute or so on the grill I turned my steak at a 45-degree radius to give it some great lines. Ronnie’s “marinade monster” got flipped before mine and continued to cook on the grill.

Half Time:

A minute or two later I flipped mine over and we were at the halfway mark. Both steaks were looking pretty good in my opinion but I figured I’d be able to pull it out.

Plate Time:

After a few more minutes of cooking and preparing to our specifications (Ronnie – Well Done, Me – Medium Well) the steaks were ready to come off of the grill.

Taste Test:

I called two of our girls into the room to perform the taste test. I had the steak cut into small pieces for them, plated and ready for serving.

The Results:

A tie! One selected Steak A and the other selected Steak B. Since Ronnie cheated with the marinade I’m calling this one GAME OVER!

Thanks to Walmart for providing the great USDA Choice steaks for today’s challenge and thanks to Ronnie for thinking she could compete. Appreciate you babe but try harder next time.
