Tips for Successful Blended Families | Blended Family Week 2020

In this article:

I like to think of a blended family as a merger with love. In the business world when companies merge it’s usually because they will be stronger together. The same can be said about two lives in a marriage; they will be stronger together. In a blended family, however, there happen to be a few more people to convince of that, but it can surely be done.

During COVID, you may have had to work even harder to bring your blended family together and properly cope with the emotions that are likely surfacing. You may also find yourself helping to manage what your spouse and children are experiencing. There are so many extra sets of emotions and layers that come with these current experiences and this is new to all of us. Being patient and extending grace to the family is especially important at this time.

Here are a few tips for successful blended families to get you through these challenging times:

Take Care of the Leaders of the Family First and Everything Else Will Follow

The marriage has to be solid and a united front. Couples in a blended family have to make tough decisions early in the relationship, like how to discipline the bonus children and even how to navigate through the storms as a family. In difficult times, the couple and marriage come first; it is the foundation of the family. The family does not work without a powerful and healthy connection between the spouses. Couples must check in with one another frequently to see what’s wanted, needed, and what’s missing. They should be ready and willing to take action to ensure the relationship continues to serve each partner. Couples must remember that children will feed off of the energy they produce, whether it’s positive or negative.

Give In to the Children

This might sound a bit weird, but in most instances, children have had the hardest time in this COVID era. Not being able to hang out with friends, go to fun places, and do all the things young people like to do is difficult. It’s important for parents to be mindful of what their children may be needing and give in to that where it makes sense. Things like allowing them to stay up a little later or be a little louder when they are laughing and playing games in the house, are small things that can bring joy.

Create New Traditions for Your Blended  Family

Another one of my tips for successful blended families is about traditions! COVID has taken us all for a loop and we have really had to get creative with how we enjoy one another’s company. As a family, think about what you can do in this space. From sharing Memory Monday’s and Taco Tuesdays to Thankful Thursdays and Family Night Fridays, there have to be frequent opportunities to have some fun together and reflect on the importance of family. Whatever the family decides should be a constant. With all of the craziness in the world, it’s important to have something fun and consistent to rely on.

Be Blended Family Goals

Set clear and realistic goals where everyone has some responsibility, so they feel included. During this pandemic there are a lot of things to keep in mind. There is the need to be extra clean, so one family member could make sure the hand sanitizers and soaps are always stocked and remind the family when supplies are getting low. Since more cooking is happening now, decide who is responsible for setting the menu and who will do the cooking. There is enough responsibility to go around, so be sure to include everyone and have a little fun with it.

Create a Blended Family Motto

It is especially important during this time to lean on what you believe in as a family. One of the best tips for successful blended families is creating a motto together! A strong family motto is a beautiful reminder of what matters. Something like “We are The Smiths and our house will always be filled with joy, laughter, and love.” is likely to help your family keep their energy focused on doing just that. And think about the actions the family must take to ensure those three things are always present. Once a family motto has been determined, frame it and place it where everyone can see it so it’s not forgotten.

As you prepare to honor your family during Blended Family Week, be sure to focus on what has made the family strong and what needs to happen to keep it that way.
