Travel Tuesday: Baltimore’s African American Festival

Staycation month on BlackandMarriedwithKids.com continues with Baltimore’s signature event of the summer – the African American Festival! A celebration of life, music and culture, the festival is the largest annual African American cultural event on the east coast attracting more than 300,000 visitors each year.

This years’ festival will not disappoint with 150+ vendors, cultural exhibits, financial empowerment activities, health screenings and a powerhouse lineup of musical performers. The fun starts Saturday, July 2nd, from noon to10 pm and wraps up on Sunday from noon to 9 pm. Kids will enjoy the rock climbing wall, arts and crafts, the inflatable obstacle course, 3-on-3 basketball challenge and more.

This year’s music lineup rivals that of any of the popular world music festivals. Headliners this year include: KJon, Noel Gourdine, Lil Mo, Chrisette Michelle, Estelle and Charlie “˜Gap Band’ Wilson.

The festival doesn’t just celebrate African American culture, history and music it also celebrates Baltimore’s talented citizens. This year visitors will help choose the winners of the “˜Step Showdown,’ a stomping the yard fraternity/sorority step show contest, the “˜Baltimore Superstar,’ an American Idol type contest and a Gospel choir competition. Winners will enjoy recording opportunities, bragging rights and cash prizes. The African American Film Festival will also showcase the best and brightest in African American film.

The African American Festival is the family event of the summer with fun for everyone. The best feature”...it’s absolutely FREE! So grab your kids, neighbors and friends and head on over to Baltimore’s event of the summer.
