For many parents work schedules conflict with school schedules making it impossible for them to take their children to school themselves. Instead, in more ideal cases, the child or children walk to school with other children in the neighborhood or an older sibling. In many neighborhoods crossing guards work to help direct children and help them safely cross the street. While most parents have taught their children to “look left, look right, and look left again,” they trust the crossing guard to act as an additional set of eyes and prompt drivers to stop as children cross. But what happens when there is no crossing guard there to help guide your little ones?
This past Thursday a 6 year old Harlem child was the victim of a hit and run while on his way to school.
“The boy, identified as Amar Diarrosova, was walking with his 9-year-old brother and was crossing First Avenue just before 8 a.m. when the tractor-trailer turned right onto the avenue from 117th Street.”
