I won’t lie. Every time I see a commercial for ancestry.com, I feel some kind of way. It’s hurtful. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to spell out why. But with little ability to do anything about it, it became downright annoying. And then I heard about this.
By the end of 2016, with the help of much needed volunteers, 1.5 million historical documents will be unleashed that will allow African Americans to finally, and seriously, dig in to our deeply buried roots.
Thanks to the Freedmen’s Bureau, an organization that has been serving black folks as far back as the Civil War, descendants of African American slaves will have a chance to know their own through the Freedmen’s Bureau Project.
For too long, our ancestral information prior to 1865 has been thought to be beyond our reach. We now know better and we can finally, and rightfully claim our history. But not with out a massive and cohesive undertaking. Brothers and Sisters, your help is needed to bring our history to light before it is forever erased.
