Viola Davis Stars in Shonda Rhimes’ Newest TV Drama

ABC’s fall line up will include a new suspense driven drama starring Oscar-nominee Viola Davis, and produced by Shonda Rhimes.

The Scandal creator’s new show is called How to Get Away With Murder. The series is centered around a criminal defense professor (Davis) and a group of law students who “become entangled in a murder plot that will rock the entire university and change the course of their lives.”

This will give Rhimes’ three shows on the network, as Grey’s Anatomy announced they will return for their 11th season this fall. How to Get Away With Murder will air Thursday nights at 10pm, in Scandal‘s previous air slot. Olivia Pope & Associates will be moving to 9pm for their 4th season.

Rhimes has also struck a deal with ABC for Shondaland to remain with ABC Studios through May 2018. This extension has been in the works for a while, and without a doubt is due to the success of her existing shows, as well as her previous show Private Practice.

Along with Kerry Washington, Viola Davis will join other notable African American actresses as stars of their own prime-time shows. Octavia Spencer stars on Fox’s Red Band Society, Taraji P. Henson will be the leading lady in Fox’s Empire, and Alfre Woodard’s show State of Affairs will debut on NBC as well.
