Want To Spice Up Your Marriage? Stop And Watch Back II The Future

Last night, after the kids went to sleep, I closed the sliding glass door to our basement office to begin blogging away, as I do every night. In the next room I could see my husband engrossed in one of my all-time favorite movies and one of the movies we love to watch together: Back II The Future. It was Part III this time, but I’ll take them all.

As I overheard snippets of Marty McFly and Doc attempt to to get their broken time machine out of the 1800s, and peeked at my husband watching, I realized there was one thing missing from the picture.

Me.

I thought, How ironic that by sitting here with writer’s block trying to think of ways to help other people spend time with their spouses, I’m leaving my own husband alone on the couch when I should be next to him.

So I just stopped. I allowed myself to believe that the handful of people that visit my website without me putting up an announcement on Facebook first would not suffer an emotional breakdown if they scrolled through at 6 am and saw the same posts from the previous day. I turned off the computer and watched 1980s Michael J. Fox try to make his way back to 1985 (oh the thought of being able to do that some days!) We even caught the beginning of Men In Black.

Tonight, take some time to stop thinking about your grind, to stop worrying and planning for your future, and enjoy your spouse and your family by living in the moment that you’re in. Because in reality, there is no time machine. All you have is this moment, and when it’s over, you will never be able to jump in your DeLorean and do it better than you did.
