What I Do to Stop My Fear of Bugs from Rubbing Off on My Kids

This post is sponsored by OFF! ®, all opinions are my own.

When I was young, my siblings and I roamed freely about my neighborhood, I understood the term “get home before the street lights come on.” And we pushed it to the limits every day, rushing home just as the lights began that eerie blinking.

You may find it difficult to believe I grew up that way based on how I act now. I’m seriously overprotective of my children. I walk or drive them everywhere, even to neighbor’s house down the street. And I’m ridiculously afraid of bugs, especially mosquitoes, to the point where we have never used our outdoor patio.

My husband says, “You’re being too protective,” and he doesn’t want my fears rubbing off on our kids. He especially doesn’t want them freaking out when they see bugs. I agree that I need to encourage my kids to turn off the TV and electronic devices and experience the great outdoors. But, I don’t think I’m doing too much by attempting to keep my family safe when they venture out.

Reading my book in the back yard and not the least bit concerned with mosquitoes now that I have the OFF!® Mosquito Lamp, which protects an area up to 10 times larger than the leading citronella candle.

So, I compromise by doing my part as a parent to fully prepare my children for the outdoors. In other words, I have the “stranger danger” talk, ensure they wear their helmets and use caution when crossing the street. I also make sure they never leave home without applying sunscreen and OFF!® mosquito repellent. Once I’m done with life lessons, they are free to go explore… and I get a bit of free time to myself.

Now that I have the OFF!® Mosquito Lamp, which protects an area up to 10 times larger than  the leading citronella candle I’ve even taken some time to relax in our backyard. I actually enjoy our new patio set! (Well…to be honest, it’s really not new since it’s over two years old…but I have never used it.)

Am I hovering too much? Definitely not!
