What Mary J. Blige Told Me About Her New Album and Being Married

Last night, I attended a private screening of Mary J. Blige’s documentary film that chronicles the making of her soon to be released album, The London Sessions. Mary traveled to London, looking for a new sound for her 13th studio album.  She stayed there for a month. And in that month she wrote and recorded the entire album while working with some of London’s hottest artists, writers and producers such as: Disclosure, Sam Smith, Naughty Boy, Emeli Sandé, and Jimmy Napes.

Evolving

Mary has worked in LA and in New York, but she took a huge risk by going over to a new country to work with new artists.  She said that although it was hard work, it was one of the best times in her career, because being there allowed her to really focus on her music without outside distractions. She said the studios in London were not the best (as for as being state of the art facilities.) But she did not mind it, because the passion from the artists is what fueled the project.

He’s Got My Back

There was no real opportunity for me to interview Mary.  So when it is was my turn to take a picture with her, I had to ask her one quick question and I had to make it count.  I introduced myself, I told her I owned a large marriage and parenting site, and I asked her what was the best part about working so closely with your spouse.  And she said: “The best part is that he’s got my back in this industry.”  Well said Mary!!!  That is one of the true benefits of marriage, that you have someone to share life’s journey with….someone to share your joys and successes with, and someone that will have your back.

On November 10, 2014 at The Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, GA. the Atlanta city council presented Mary J. Blige with a proclamation during the screening of her documentary about the making of her album, The London Sessions.

So many people connect with Mary’s music because she’s experienced the things that we all go through and we can hear and feel it in her songs.  I am looking forward to The London Sessions because Mary is evolving as an artist, with new sounds, and a new team. Yet she is still going to be bringing her same soulful, heartfelt spirit to every song.

The London Sessions will be available in Stores on December 2nd.  It’s available for pre-order or for download on iTunes.
