Ava DuVernay, won the the Best Director Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for Middle of Nowhere, a film that chronicles a young woman, caught between two worlds and two men in the search for herself. Ruby, the main character, is a bright young medical student that sacrifices her dreams when her husband becomes incarcerated.
“It’s a real challenge to find African American characters with depth,” Oyelowo said at a post-screening Q&A, “But when I read this, it was just like ‘Do the Right Thing,’ or ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ the characters just lept off the page….Ava is transcending what is called ‘black cinema.” – – Los Angeles Times
Middle of Nowhere is opening in select cities on October 12 and October 19. And here are reasons why you must see this film on opening weekend:
- Because Ava DuVernay is an African American women that un-apologetically writes from her voice, her experiences, and from her point of view.
- Because we want to show that movies that have this voice (an African American’s voice) do have an audience and they can get people out to the theaters.
- Because Ava won the Best Director Award 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival and this film has received great reviews. We get tricked into seeing big blockbuster films all of the time because their marketing is so good. But even without the big marketing budget, we can rest assured that this film promises to be good.
- Because like or not, opening weekend sales determine the success of the film. And again, we want to show that these films have an audience.
- And we want this film to be shown in more markets. It is only opening in a limited number of theaters. A successful opening weekend could help to send this movie to more cities!
- Because we just love Ava’s work, the example she is setting, and the doors she is opening for other African American independent film producers and directors.
