3 Ways to Drop the Drama and Find Peace in the New Year

The New Year is often a time of hearty celebration with friends, music and alcohol. But what does one do if they prefer to ring in the New Year alone or more contemplatively?

There are a number of ways to celebrate the New Year in a less traditional way and make it meaningful. Below are three ways you can bring in the New Year quietly either alone or with friends.

When you wake up first thing in the morning, go and get it so it is the first thing that comes into your home in the New Year.

1) Burning Bowl/Fire Pit

This is one of my favorites and can be done throughout the year either alone or with a group of friends. Doing it on New Year’s Eve is a powerful way to set the intention of what you want to let go and have more of in the New Year.

But safety first! Since this uses fire, you want to be careful and consult with your local fire station to adhere to safety guidelines. You can modify this by tearing up the paper instead of using fire.

Here is how it works. On one sheet of paper, write down the things that you want to let go of. For example, anger, regret, jealousy, hate, and/or judgment. It’s not uncommon for people to use multiple sheets of paper. Then, take another sheet of paper and write down all of the things you want to bring or have waiting for you in the New Year.

Once you have these written down, burn the paper with all of the things you want to leave behind in either a large metal fire bowl, fire pit or tear it up into small pieces. If you tear up your paper, throw it in the outside garbage. Do not keep it in the house.

Take a few minutes to process and release the energy that you no longer want. Then, take the list of things you do want and burn or tear that list into small pieces like you did the first list.

2) Wish Box

Write down all of the things that you want to have waiting for you in the New Year and include symbols of those things when possible. For example, you may want to place money in your box for prosperity and abundance.

When you place your list and symbols in your box, take it outside on New Year’s Eve and place it where no one can find it. Then when you wake up first thing in the morning, go and get it so it is the first thing that comes into your home in the New Year.

Open your box and go through each item and silently internalize the essence of what it will bring to you.
