5 Lessons that Keep Us Growing Together After 27 Years

Even after 27 years of marriage, things are still getting better. You know nothing stays the same. Life continues to happen day by day, moment by moment. It is not standing still waiting for us to get our acts together. It’s up to us to get our act together in the moment we find ourselves.

Many years ago my husband and I, we decided time was not going to catch us standing still. Our marriage would continue to grow through the years. Our marriage may be older than yours or perhaps you have been married longer than us. Either way, the principles that have helped us over the years can help you too. Take them and make them your own. Tailor them to your personal situation. Take from them and do what supports your marriage.

  1. We continue to read marriage books, attend marriage workshops, and watch instructional sessions on marriage.
  2. We have learned to keep arguing to a minimum. We talk, discuss, listen, agree and disagree from a place of love.
  3. In the early years, we had a couple that personally mentored us. Today we are mentored from afar as we look at and watch strong couples. We observe the healthy practices of couples who are more wise than we are. We are not trying to mimic others, but watching and learning new ways to support one another.
  4. We put what we learn into action. We continue to be doers of the good stuff we learn. It helps to make us better people and as we become better people individually, we become better together.
  5. We believe and have faith for a strong, thriving, healthy, fun marriage.

Just like us, over the years you will change and so will your mate. Continue to grow and change together. Don’t grow apart, but grow closer. There are many things we do to help keep our marriage going and growing. I hope you find something in these five lessons that you can apply to your married life and make it your own.
