5 Tips to Deal With Family and Friends For Thanksgiving

by William and Yolanda Powell (https://amzn.to/uZ4gpu)

William and Yolanda Powell, authors of Soul Food and Living Water (https://amzn.to/uZ4gpu) share five things to ponder as you prepare to gather with family members and friends for Thanksgiving.

Memories:   Warm memories shared among family members can often help to establish a steady and strong path on which everyone can move forward long after the day is done.

Think of at least one good memory you can share to create and add more lasting memories.

Commitment to family:   Extended family gatherings around food are still one of the African-American community’s greatest assets- despite notions of dysfunction and disintegration.

Think about and share one thing about which you are grateful regarding each family member.

Gathering without gaps:  Generational gaps hinder goals of family unity and closeness.  When families-across generations- commit to being in one another’s presence on a continual basis, those times become opportunities to draw strength and courage from one another.

Make a commitment as a family to connect and come together more often. Identify when you will meet again or how you will stay connected.

Maintain strong family ties:  The fact that “God sets the lonely in families” gives weight to the importance of family to Him. He’s created the family unit for the personal and spiritual growth of each family member.   When family systems are not active and vibrant growth can be hindered in various ways.

As the family gathers reflect on God’s purposes for the family. Does your view line up? Identify one thing you can do to value the family more then, do it.

Transforming family feuds:  Occasionally issues arise that threaten to shatter peace and cause a breach in the family. When feuding between family members is dealt with appropriately everyone can experience great moments together.

Consider the relationships that are out of whack in the family. Consider ways to start the process of reconciliation and get started.
