The Academy Awards show is the awards show of the season. It is the must attend awards show and the red carpet everyone wants to be seen walking down. Lupita Nyongo was one of the best (if not the best dressed) ladies of the evening. The buzz leading up to this years’ show centered on the lack of diversity in the nominations and host Neil Patrick Harris tackled it in his opening skit. Or shall we say made light of it with the joke “today we honor Hollywood’s best and whitest. Sorry…brightest.”
It was a night of great speeches and memorable quotes. One of the nights memorable quotes came from Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ winner Patricia Arquette who used her acceptance speech to champion equal rights for women. She brought Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez to the edge of their seats with this heartfelt closing statement…”It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.” I agree!
The best musical performance of the night belongs to John Legend and Common hands down! Their soul stirring performance of ‘Glory’ brought actor David Oyelowo to tears and earned them a standing ovation from the audience. They didn’t stop there; they also gave the best speeches of the night when accepting theirs Oscars for ‘Best Original Song’ from the movie Selma. Common’s speech was moving and his closing remark was simply riveting, “this bridge was built on hope, welded with compassion and elevated by love for all human beings.” John Legend reminded us that the struggle is real. ‘Selma’ is now because the struggle for justice is right now” said Legend.

I definitely feel Selma was snubbed in two categories. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter should have been nominated and should have won for her work in Selma and the film should have also won for ‘Best Picture.’
