They say that behind every great man is a great woman. I like to take it one step further and say that behind every great man is a wise woman. But I didn’t make that up. Dating all the way back to Biblical times, and specifically Proverbs 31, we see the tremendous value a wise woman is to her husband. When it comes to investing in your husband, exactly what will it take? While there are a slew of things I could come up with, I chose to defer to the Proverbs 31 woman and take three lessons from her playbook.

Having his back is about more than just showing him support. To be sure, support is essential. But the wise woman goes above and beyond being a cheerleader. She understands that making her man great requires not only her support but her investment.
Invest in Yourself
“Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.” Proverbs 31:11. A wise woman knows that in order to prop her man up, she has to be well put together. She is aware that he needs her in more ways than one, so taking care of herself should be her first priority.
- She protects her relationship with God
- She takes pride in her appearance
- She pursues her own ambitions
By investing in herself, her happiness is not solely dependent on her relationship with her husband. As a result, he can feel free to pursue God’s purpose for his life without worrying that he is leaving her behind.
Invest in His Spirit
“She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.” Proverbs 31:12. Though outfitted as the stronger partner, a man is just as susceptible to emotional, mental, and spiritual damage as his wife. To keep his spirit from falling out of her reach, a wise woman makes sure that she provides a safe place for his spirit to rest when he is struggling.
- He may have a tough day at work.
- He may begin to doubt his purpose.
- He may experience failure in something he really cares about.
- He may begin to battle with depression.
Regardless of the circumstance, a great wife who has invested in herself will be prepared to invest in her husband’s spiritual well-being.
Invest in His Passion
“Her husband is respected at the city gate where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.” Proverbs 31:23. No matter the vocation: rapper, author, speaker, architect, entrepreneur, etc., a great wife finds a way to help her husband achieve his dreams. By investing in herself and serving his spirit, she helps him enter the arena where he earns the respect of those in his field. He is able to lead from the front and she doesn’t lose her place in his list of priorities. That security prepares her for the challenges that come with the wholehearted pursuit of his passion:
- Staying up later
- Waking up earlier
- A long list of meetings
- Less time for socializing
- Less time for the kids
These things can be a challenge to any relationship. But if she wants to invest in her husband’s passion, she takes steps to ensure they don’t cause harm to her family.
Though simple, these tips can be pretty challenging for a woman who isn’t prayed up and relying on God. But for the woman who is, greatness can be achieved for both her husband and herself. And it will be only a matter of time before she sees that her investments will be well worth it.
