Food for Thought: Possible Link Between Premature Puberty and Food

It’s no secret that our girls are going through a metamorphosis into young women earlier. While they often still have the mindset and mannerisms of little girls, their bodies are developing at a faster rate. Today young girls as early as five years old are showing signs of puberty. For some it might feel awkward to live in a body that appears older than their actual age.

“Indeed, researchers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Kaiser Permanente of Northern California and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in a 2010 study published in the journal Pediatrics, found that 23 percent of black girls, 15 percent of Hispanic girls, 10 percent of white girls and two percent of Asian girls had started developing breasts by the time they were seven.”

Although there are many variables to consider when it comes to why our girls are developing earlier than years past, one potential factor is the food we are consuming.

“Fearing the potential effects of hormones used in the meat, poultry and dairy industries — the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows six different sex hormones for meat and dairy production.”

While organic foods are more easily accessible these days, many families may find it difficult to afford more healthy options. Additionally, despite there being ways to potentially medically slow down the progression of premature puberty this can be concerning for parents. For more on this visit The Grio.
