Here’s the Number One Reason African American Women Need to Protect Their Hearts

GO RED! It’s not just a catchy little phrase. It’s a movement that, when followed, has a great impact on the number one killer of Americans – heart disease. And, never mind if you’re a woman because, chances are, you’re at a greater risk than you may realize.

Heart disease and stroke kill 1 in 3 women, yet it’s 80% preventable. Additionally, African American women are twice as likely to develop heart disease more than any other group.

To help bring awareness to this issue, the GO RED campaign was started. On Friday, February 5th, we are encouraged to wear red to help bring awareness to this very important issue. As the number one killer, it’s strange to say “bring awareness.” But the truth is, as preventable as this disease is, women are not taking heed.

So, some women never see it coming. Some women can see it coming with a simple blood pressure or cholestorol check. Either way, one in three women are fatally hit by heart disease. If an African American woman is in the group, chances are, she’s that ONE.

African American women are twice as likely to develop heart disease more than any other group. However, the American Heart Association reports that “the good news is, African-Americans can improve their odds of preventing and beating these diseases by understanding the risks and taking simple steps to address them.”
