How to Update Your Wardrobe by Mixing Prints. 6 Steps to Get You Started

Print mixing is one of my absolute favorite trends right now (and I don’t see that changing any time soon). Unless you’ve been cozied up under a rock for a while, you probably know that my BFF *in my head* Solange Knowles is the Queen of mixed prints. Seriously.

I know mixing prints may seem a little intimidating to some…there is definitely a fine line between chic and ‘cray’ when it comes to this trend, but remember these tips and you’ll be on Fashionista level 10. Not to mention you’ll be creating new wardrobe combo’s, thus saving money. #BOOM

1. Start off easy. Mixing Polka dots and stripes is print mixing 101. Try classic black and white (also on trend right now) and add a pop of color with bold shoes and accessories.

2. Make sure at least one color repeats in each piece of the outfit (for example, black and gray stripes with black, red, and gray floral). Similar colors will help your prints blend more easily.

3. Mix loose prints (like polka dots) with structured prints (like stripes).

4. Combine small designs (such as gingham) with larger ones (such as bold flowers).

5. Don’t forget the details. Accessories can make or break an outfit. Stick with solid colors that compliment the rest of your ensemble.

6. Don’t get crazy. Leave the print count at two and if all else fails, just stick to tip #1 to avoid looking like you got dressed in the dark.
