I am a procrastinator. I admit it. Every time I’m invited to a Halloween party, I wait until the last minute to pick out a costume. And the costumes in the store are picked over. So, my friends and I end up brainstorming ideas about creating our own attire. Since I’m a writer, not an artist, what I pull together is pretty pathetic. I’m left grabbing anything off the rack.
OK, I’ll give you a clearer picture. One year I was a carton of Ronald McDonald French fries. I volunteered at an elementary school and helped organized a Halloween party. It was the only costume left, and it seemed appropriate.
That weekend, I decided to go out with my sister and friends–to a party I waited until the eleventh hour to R.S.V.P. My best friend was a belly dancer. My sister and her husband dressed as little red riding hood and the big bad roof. I stood next to these two sexy girls in a foam French fry. The “my ex-boyfriend–the love of my young life” walked in with his friends. I wanted the Hamburglar to steal me away and run out of the room. But he didn’t show up, and I tried to disappear into the floor. I don’t think I would have felt so bad if I was someone’s side of fries. Couple’s costumes usually come off as cool not corny, even if it’s homemade.
