Why You Need to Stop Whining About Your 9 to 5 in 2018

By: Danielle Pierce

So many people have gotten the entrepreneur bug and claim they want to leave their day job. All day on social media, you can see post after post of women claiming they are done with working for someone else and they are going to go after their dream. Typically, you will find lots of comments in agreement with this sentiment and the general consensus seems to be that it’s okay to quit your job and follow your dreams.

This is SUCH bad advice.

I often find myself literally cringing at my key board watching the comments section: “You go girl” and “God got you” and “Blackgirlmagic” and on and on…

Seriously, what is magical or excellent about leaving a job with no solid plan of action for your life as an entrepreneur? At best, it is somewhat foolish and in the worst case scenario – this short sighted thinking can set you back years in your growth and development.

Most Americans without a business don’t have a clue what they would do if they were to get fired today. Because you have a good business idea or you have generated a couple of thousand dollars on the side doesn’t mean you are ready to take the leap into full fledged entrepreneurship. And this is coming from the perspective of someone that has been a full time entrepreneur for over 10 years!

You need a solid plan of action before you even fix your lips to state that you are “tired of your job.” I can guarantee you that you will be equally tired of being broke and struggling as an entrepreneur if you fail to create and execute a blueprint as your own boss. Here are seven important questions you need to ask and get the answers to:

  1. Who is your ideal client and how will you reach them?
  2. What kind of lifestyle do you intend to have during this transition?
  3. How much money does it take to support this lifestyle?
  4. What is your sales funnel?
  5. What is your marketing budget?
  6. What is the date  your business will become profitable?
  7. What is your source of funding?

I could go on, but you get the idea. In 2018, every time you think about complaining about your boss, your co-worker that smacks when she eats, or your other co-worker with bad breath – stop yourself immediately and use that time to craft your plan.

As they say, write the vision and make it plain. In the words of the wise philosopher Eric Thomas – champions make adjustments NOT excuses.
