From scrapping housewives to teen mom tantrums, reality shows have gotten a bad rap because they have a tendency to portray people in the worse light possible. There have been heated debates over the portrayal of Black people in shows like Basketball Wives and Real Housewives of Atlanta and whether drama equals higher ratings.
However, there are some new shows that seem to prove that theory wrong. These shows depict people raising families, starting businesses, and a host of other experiences that their viewers can identify with. Here at BMWK, we are dedicated to showing positive images and the following shows seem to do just that.
Lala’s Full Court Life
A spin-off of La La Anthony’s wedding special, La La’s Full Court Life debuted a few months ago on VH1. The show follows the former MTV VJ and TV personality as she adjusts to living in New York City after marrying basketball player Carmelo Anthony, her long-time boyfriend and the father of her son, Kiyan. This show proves that being a basketball wife includes more than swiping credit cards and throwing drinks. La La isn’t just a pretty face with a rich husband. She is trying to launch an acting career in addition to countless interviews and appearances. Despite all of this, she seems to be down to earth and that seems to attract plenty of viewers because VH1 is bringing the show back for another season.

Tia and Tamera
We watched the Mowry twins grow up thanks to their hit show Sister, Sister. Now, the twins are back with their reality show, Tia and Tamera on Style Network. The show follows the twins as they plan for the two of the biggest events in a woman’s life: getting married and having a baby. As Tia awaits the arrival of her son Cree, Tamera is in the middle of planning her dream wedding. Consequently, this led to a couple of squabbles between the sisters. But despite a few arguments, they remain close. It is obvious that there is a lot of love between these two. This show has also been granted a second season and I can’t wait to see how they balance their new lives and take on more challenges.

Chef Roble and Co.
I reviewed this show for this site a few days after it premiered on Bravo and I still stand by that review. I was excited to see a young black man on television that didn’t include him picking a mate from a litter of women or being a criminal. Roble is young chef starting a catering business with his sister and friends. The show opens viewers to the high energy world of catering and event planning. We get to see crazy clients, gorgeous food and a few mishaps. Despite a few mistakes, the business seems to be thriving and Roble and his staff seems to be close knit. The show premiered to 1.3 million viewers, the highest rated Bravo series premiere in 2011.
