In a new ad, Nivea attempts to get men to “look like they give a damn” by becoming more “civilized” – in their words, it means cutting the ‘fro.
Many folks have been in an uproar about the ad, including Roots drummer ?uestlove, who tweeted his displeasure. Other bloggers have called it just plain ignorant, considering the complicated history of black hair in America. Nivea has yet to release an official statement.
Update: Nivea recently posted the following statement on their Facebook page:
“Thank you for caring enough to give us your feedback about the recent “Re-civilized” NIVEA FOR MEN ad. This ad was inappropriate and offensive. It was never our intention to offend anyone, and for this we are deeply sorry. This ad will never be used again. Diversity and equal opportunity are crucial values of our company.”
