Setting Realistic Relationship Goals

When we think of success in areas such as business and personal triumphs we recognize it doesn’t occur just by chance. With any business that excels and experiences achievement and with any individual who has reached a desired goal or overcome any other challenge, it requires work. It doesn’t happen overnight but always starts with a vision, then planning, followed by goal setting and ACTION!

Not only can a business benefit from preparation and goal setting, but successful relationships are also strengthened by having realistic goals. Whether you are a newlywed, just dating or married for 25 years, it’s never too late or too early to plan for your relationship future.

There are huge advantages for couples who create goals. One clear benefit is both partners being on the same page. Having goals set by the couple stimulates great communication and empowers each partner to speak up and ask for what they need.

If you are not sure where to begin, allow me help you. It is a process and here is the guideline to get you started.

For relationship success, start by creating S.M.A.R.T goals.

S ““ Specific. As you create, make sure the goals are clear and specific so there aren’t any doubts on expectations. Is it effective communication, more intimacy or a better handle on family finances? Being as detailed as possible gives partners a greater chance of reaching that relationship target.

M ““ Measurable. What do you have to experience in order to confirm your relationship goals are on track? Are there measurable steps along the way? Action items on how goals will get accomplished must be put in place ahead of time. For example, financial goals might start with planning and developing a budget. How a couple maintains that budget can be measured.

A ““ Attainable. Can you both make it all happen? Making sure both partners are ready and willing is vital. It won’t work if both people aren’t completely on board and have a desire to build a great relationship.

R ““ Realistic. Are the goals realistic? Many relationships fail as a result of unrealistic expectations. Being honest about who both partners are in the relationship helps to create reasonable action items. If one partner struggles with communication, it’s not fair to demand they bare all overnight.

T ““ Timely. When do you want these goals to take affect? Determine whether it is 1 month, six months or 1 year. Set a time frame. Timelines are needed as a guideline and helps to hold both partners accountable.

The S.M.A.R.T goals are just the beginning. Once they have been created by both partners, the next most crucial step is taking ACTION. Believe that your relationship is worth it, start creating and make it happen!
