Broadway Unites Outside of NYPD to Honor Eric Garner and Protest

We’ve all watched and listened, in horror, to the coverage of 43-year-old Eric Garner’s death by the hands of a NY police officer. Outraged, people everywhere want to know why this man was placed in a choke hold and why he had to die.

As it currently stands, the NYPD has take disciplinary action against the two police officers. In addition, four EMS workers have been suspended without pay because of footage showing that they did not provide Eric Garner with medical assistance at the scene. But it goes without saying that these actions are far from enough when it come sot seeking justice for a husband and father of six who lost his life.

In response to what happened to Eric Garner, over 100 cast members from a number of Broadway shows united in Times Square to pay tribute to Garner and express their feelings about what happened on July 17th, and what is happening across our nation with regards to police brutality. With black t-shirts on their bodies and pain in their hearts, the cast members harmonized while poet, J. Watts, recited a poem entitled, I Can’t Breathe.

The protest was organized by actor, Brandon Victor Dixon, and his business partner, choreographer Warren Allen.
