4 Right-on-Time Prayers for Forgiveness in Your Marriage

Marriage cannot succeed without forgiveness. I know that’s a bold statement. But it’s true. Every day we have opportunity to offend one another. It may not happen on purpose. Most times it’s an accident. Yet and still, with every offense comes the opportunity to forgive.

Forgiveness is one of those areas most couples, including me and mine, could spend a little extra time talking to God about.

Here are four prayers centered around forgiveness and marriage. Insert your spouse’s name into the blanks.

  1. Teach me to love unconditionally
From this moment on, l decide to love unconditionally just like you Father.  I love my husband/wife with a love that is not easily offended or quickly angered. I’m not keeping a record of wrong. Your love is shed abroad in my heart. That includes forgiveness. I forgive just as you forgive me.

Scripture: Psalm 136:2; 1 Corinthian 13:4-13; Romans 5:5

  1. Show me how to forgive quickly, making forgiving a habit.
Father, I will no longer hold on to things that do not serve me. Not forgiving does not serve me or my marriage. So, I release ______________________ (insert name of offender here) from the offense that angered and hurt me so much. I receive healing and peace in my heart right now. I will no longer let the sun go down on my wrath. I will get things right, right away.

Scripture: Isaiah 41:10; Matthew 11:28; Psalm 30:2; Ephesian 4:25-27

  1. Show me how to not take offense
Lord of sufficiency, your grace is sufficient for me, and your power made perfect in my weakness. You are my refuge and my hiding place. In my marriage, you shield me from intentional and unintentional harm. I am safe in the shadow of your wing; I don’t even notice offense because my heart and mind are stayed on you, as I see through the eyes of love.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9; 1 Timothy 6: 11-12; Psalm 91:4, 138:7; 1 Corinthians 10:13

  1. Teach me to recognize the real enemy
______________________ and I are not enemies. We love each other. When there is a challenge we run to you, the author and finisher of our faith. You hold our answer. You said we have an enemy who is the author of confusion, who comes to steal, kill and destroy. Since we know this, we will not come against each other but against the wickedness that tries to hinder our marriage. Lord of peace, grace, mercy and love we receive your wisdom. We recognize the enemy for who he is, and we recognize you as our source and sustainer.

Scripture: John 16:33; Ephesian 4:21-27; John 10:10; 1 Peter 5:8; 2 John 1:3; Jude 1:2
