Single and in Love With a Memory

Nathan Hale Williams raises an excellent point in an article that looks at the way we tend to romanticize a relationship long after it has ended. We forget the heartache and all the things that went wrong in an attempt to convince ourselves that it really was right. This is particularly common amongst those of us who are single. Sometimes a run in at the supermarket or coming across an old photo or card will open the floodgates of feelings.

“When you’re single, it is so easy to get caught in a web of romanticized memories of a failed relationship. Sometimes, there may be room to revisit the relationship if the basis for the break-up was circumstantial. However, most times, you broke up for a reason, and honestly, it’s best to just reminisce from a distance.”

Williams’ advice to individuals to “reminisce from a distance” might be helpful for those of us who struggle when it comes to feelings. Many of us know firsthand that feelings can get us into trouble if we let them, as well as how important learning to let go can be for the healing process. Perhaps putting enough space between you, the person, and the memories will help you to see with clarity and avoid getting tangled in the “web of romanticized memories.” For more on this visit Essence.
