We all know that traveling is meant to be fun and that the ultimate goal is to relax, recharge and make memories with the family, but travel can also disrupt your healthy routines and eating habits. So that may leave you wondering how to stay healthy during travel. Let’s face it, being sick on vacation is not fun…AT ALL! As a medical professional and family traveler, I’ve come up with some fun and simple ways to have a great time on your family vacation while staying healthy. Here are my five favorite healthy travel tips:
1. Walk
If you’re in the airport, take a brisk walk around the terminal. This is especially easy if you’ve checked luggage, so you have a bit of freedom. In the event that you didn’t check your bags, use your luggage as resistance training and lug it around as you take a few laps. Bonus: Pushing your little one in a stroller is a win-win!
2. Snack Prep
We all know that traveling can destroy any diet. So, take along snacks that are easy to transport, like trail mix or what I like to call, nature’s candy…FRUIT! It’s easy. It’s portable. It’s TSA approved. It’s nutritious.
3. Relax
Easier said than done. How many times have we needed a vacation AFTER the vacation? Try to take a few minutes to rest on a chaise while the kids are in the pool. When the kids tucker out and turn in early, that’s the perfect opportunity to recuperate. Remember: Too much stress weakens the immune system.
4. Be creative
Want to get in some cardio? Run in the pool. Take the stairs in the hotel instead of the elevator, or by all means, book an adventurous calorie-burning excursion, like biking or a walking tour during your stay.
5. Wash. Wash. Wash.
Being on the go we sometimes throw our good habits out the window. Let’s not forget that even on vacation, hand washing is still very important. Remind everyone that they should wash their hands before and after they eat their meals. If there is no access to a restroom, use hand sanitizer. If you are determined to stay healthy during your vacation, be sure to set realistic goals for yourself and don’t be so hard on yourself. Have fun and enjoy your time away!
