This weekend we were at a kiddie football game watching our six year old who is a cheerleader. We were happy to be there because this finally seems like something she’s interested in that she’s going to stick with.
Unlike the time we signed her up for soccer because she said she wanted to play that. I (TheDad) bought her all of this soccer gear, she proceeded to go out in the first game and score four goals (I had dreams of the women’s olympic soccer team dancing in my head that night) then she totally lost interest. By midway through the season we’d have to fuss at her about wasting our time and giving up because she’d be asking the coach to take her out of the game so she could talk and play on the sidelines. (Olympic dreams shattered… mine that is :-)).
Well a few games in and she’s still into the cheering so it’s a good thing. Back to this week’s game. We’re in the bleachers and not only do they learn a few cheers during the week but they also learn one there at the game. So they go into this new cheer called, “Rock the boat”. Here are the words…
Rock the boat
Dont tip it over
Rock the boat
Dont tip it overHey “Name”!
Hey what?
Can you rock the boat?
No way!
Can you rock the boat?
Okay!She slides
She slides
She get on her horse and ridesShe wants you
And you
To rock the boat too!
Now all of the parents if the cheer leaders and the football team thought it was kinda catchy, the team was winning so everyone was in a good mood. Then we started listening to the words. Where does get on the horse and ride come from in a song about rocking the boat. Then when they do that they have this little gesture where the raise one hand above their head like they’re riding the pony. Playful cheers from the crowd started to come out like, “Lets not do that cheer again” or “alright coaches these girls don’t need to be riding any ponies”. It was one of those we playing but we serious kinda moments. I looked on the web and found a video of a girl doing it except instead of riding the pony she breaks down into the full fledged butterfly then shakes her lil hips. Check it out:
BMWK what do you think? Were we over reacting? Is this cool for a bunch of six year olds to be doing or do they need to find a new cheer? I have three girls and I’m one of those daddy don’t play dudes so help a brother out.
Totally inappropriate for a 6 y/o. Why didn’t the person who taught them that cheer realize that. Next thing you know she’ll be dancing like that little girl in the video you posted a while back. That cheerleading coach needs to be checked.
This is a good one dad,i am one of the oldest cheer leaders still living. They do this to introduce themselves.
everybody start out in a circle holding hands with one girl in the middle they jump in then out.
jump in jump out turn yourself about
jump in jump out turn your self about
the girl in the middle says my name is ____________
team yea
and i love the (gators)
team yea
will love the (gators) for the rest of my life
team yea
middle girl points to someone else and they continue
No, I don’t think you overreacted. I think that’s inappropriate for any primary or secondary school cheers.
