Warm weather has been trying to break through the last few days. We can take that as a sign that spring is really trying to arrive and stay awhile. The most popular treat that arrives with spring, is the spring break vacation. Kids look forward to it as well as parents and teachers (lol). If you can’t go away on a fab family vacation for spring break we have a few fun & fabulous ideas/ways to enjoy a ‘spring break staycation.’
Here are a few ideas to enjoy your spring break at home that won’t break the budget…
- Spend a day at the Zoo! Spend the day at the zoo and see all the beautiful animals. The visit can also double as a learning experience, have the kids write a brief report for school about what were there favorite animals and what they learned about their new animal friends.
- Theme Park Hop – Depending on where you live you can spend several days of your spring break visiting the different local theme parks. For example if you live in Orlando, you can visit Universal Studios one day, Disney World and the Sea World the next.
- Museum Hop – Learning and fun are always a good mix on family vacations. Another great budget friendly idea is to museum hop on one of your spring break days. For example MD/DC/VA residents could spend the day visiting the ‘Air & Space Museum,’ the ‘Smithsonian,’ or the cool media museum the ‘Newseum’ in downtown DC.
- Movie Time – A day at the movies with the kids followed by lunch at your favorite ‘2 for’ restaurant is one of my favorite ways to spend time with the kids. Let everyone vote on the movie and the restaurant so no one feels left out. Many of our local theaters have certain days that are discounted as well as cheaper tickets during matinee hours. You can also do the ‘red box’ version and rent a movie to watch at home and order the family’s favorite pizzas.
- Bowling – there is nothing more fun that spending the day at the bowling alley with your family. From the youngest to the oldest, everyone will enjoy bowling. Check your local alleys for spring break specials. One way we keep the costs down is to eat lunch before we go. That way we don’t spend all of our money at the concession stands.
Make your ‘spring break staycation’ a fabulous group event and invite your kids’ best friends. Or, have your kid’s friends over for a play date. A few PB&J sandwiches and some chips will make you the Parents of the Year! Whatever you decide to do during spring break, make sure it’s a fun alternative to the family’s normal routine.
BMWK – what do you have planned for spring break? How do you ensure that your kids have fun, even when you are not going a family trip?
