Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, the kids are fully focused on Christmas morning. And there are two major events at our house on Christmas morning: opening the gifts and eating Christmas Breakfast.
And for the last 5 years, the kids have been preparing Christmas breakfast with Grandma. But this year, even Grandma will get a break….because we’ve found a great Sausage Casserole recipe that the kids will be able to prepare (with minimal help from Grandma.)
You see, this recipe includes Johnsonville® Fully Cooked Breakfast Sausage. They have 3 flavors: Original Recipe, Vermont Maple Syrup, and Turkey. Since the sausages are fully cooked, the only thing you really have to worry about is if the kids are going to get egg shells in your casserole (crunch…crunch….)
Ingredients:
- 1 Package of Johnsonville® Fully Cooked Breakfast Sausage
- 2 Packages of Croissant Roll Dough
- 6 eggs
- 1-1/2 cups of milk
- Veggies – of your choice like chopped red and yellow peppers, or spinach, or onions, or no veggies…it’s up to you. You can even use cooked hash brown potatoes.
- 8 oz bag of Shredded Cheese – your choice, we use Colby Jack or Cheddar.
- Cooking Spray
- 13X9X2 inch baking dish
Directions:
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
- Crumble entire package of breakfast sausage and set aside.
- Spray baking dish with cooking spray
- Take one package of Croissant Roll Dough and lay it down to cover the bottom of the dish. Smooth it out so that all of the seams disappear.
- Sprinkle all of the sausage over the dough
- Chop veggies (optional)
- Sprinkle veggies over sausage
- Sprinkle lots and lots of cheese all over everything.
- Crack eggs and beat them in a separate bowl. Also mix in milk with eggs too.
- Season egg mixture…with salt, pepper and even onion powder. This will be to your preference.
- Pour egg mixture over sausage and veggies
- Take the other can of Croissant Roll Dough and lay it down on top of everything.
- Put in the oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes. (Adults should do this for the kids.) Please keep checking it though…as your oven may cook faster than ours. You want to be careful not to burn the dough. My oven cooks fast, so I put it on 325 degrees so I could cook it the entire time without the dough burning on the top.
This dish was very delicious and simple to make…especially with the Johnsonville® Fully Cooked Breakfast Sausage! And the kids will enjoy making it for the entire family. Let them be creative by mixing in the types of veggies (or no veggies) that they like. And enjoy your holidays!!
