I have had an interesting weekend. We finally (praise GOD!!!!) made our move to North Carolina, and we are adjusting to the change quite well. Being around family–both those I know and those I’ve just met–always seems to make everything so much better. When things change, refreshing comes; however that is not without its negative moments. To help combat the hardships that transition brings, I would like to suggest the following:
* Set up some ground rules PRIOR to transitioning. It’s important to ensure all parties involved in the transition understand what is going to happen, how it is going to happen and why.
* Ensure everyone has a role to play in the transition. Make sure those roles are understood and clearly defined. Ask periodic questions and ensure communication is consistent to determine whether or not changes need to be made.
* If things go against the plans set aside, employ flexibility. There is no sense in fighting, getting frustrated or pointing fingers. Roll with the punches and understand flexibility is key.
* Above all, POSSESS THE DAY. You’re making the transition for a reason. Possess it, take ownership and move forward in whatever destiny and plan God has for you.
These pointers have truly helped my family and I make the transition we’re in the process of making. Whether our vehicle breaks down, or living conditions are better or worse than what you anticipated, this transition belongs to us!
God bless!

Harriet Hairston is a woman who slips and slides in and out of labels (military officer, human resource manager, minister, mentor, spoken word artist and teacher). The only ones that have stuck so far are “wife” and “mother” (the most important in her estimation). The rest have taught her well that only what she does for Christ will last. There is one more permanent label she holds: “author.” You can purchase her first book, “Who Are You?” simply by clicking on the link. You can also contact her at [email protected].

I’m glad everything went well for you and your family. My kids and I just moved to a different city within the same state and I really needed this post. For the most part, our transition is/has gone smoothly. One of my twins is having trouble adjusting to the new daycare, but I’m sure she’ll be fine in a few weeks.

I wish you and your family happiness and success with your new adventure! Transition/Change is inevitable! I agree…embrace and make the most of out it. I pray that you and your husband will grow stronger in the new environment. It pleases me to hear a couple that’s facing adversity comes together and makes a unified decision to change and stick together on the decision.
Wishing you and yours plentiful blessings….
