I moved away from home when I was 18 years old to go to college. And at first, I was happy to be freeeeeee! I was liberated. I could do what I wanted, I could stay out as late as I wanted. And, I didn’t have to ask permission for anything.
All of that was great….but there was one thing that I quickly realized when I went home for the first time on Thanksgiving break.
There’s no place like home!
Even now that I am in my 40s, as soon as I walk into my parent’s home, the first breath that I take brings back memories of my childhood.
First of all, if my mom knows I’m coming to town, then she’s cooking all of my favorites. So those delicious aroma’s hit me as soon as I walk in the door. But beyond that, I feel the love and security that my parents always ensured we had growing up. And it makes coming home the best feeling ever…no matter how old I get.
And those are exactly the feelings I want my kids to have as they grow up and leave the house. I want them to know that there is always one place in this world that they can go that will make them feel loved, safe, and secure. I want coming home to feel like being wrapped in a soft warm fuzzy blanket.
So there are 3 things I am doing to ensure that my kids will always love to come home:
- Give them unconditional love. This one is big and I’ve had to learn it the hard way with my oldest child who is 22 years old. Your kids need to know, whether you agree with their life-decisions or not, that you still love them.
- Cook good food. I learned this one from my mom. Her good cooking always has me wanting to come home…every time!!!
- Create great family memories. No one wants to come home to a place that represents bad memories. This is why we go out of our way to make sure that our home provides plenty of love, laughter, and security for our kids.
And this is why I am so happy that Marie Callender’s has launched the Comforts from Home Project by bringing the comforts of home to those who protect America’s homes every day: the brave men and women of the U.S. military.
This is a program that shares a bit of home with our troops and helps them celebrate the holidays year round. Every time you enter a code from specially-marked packages of Marie Callender’s meals or desserts, Marie Callender’s will make a donation to the USO to support USO Operation Celebration™. Isn’t that wonderful!!! Visit www.ComfortsfromHome.com to join Marie Callender’s in helping to bring a little bit of home sweet home to our U.S. service men and women serving worldwide.
