‘Sesame Street’ is well-known for accentuating diversity among children while teaching them to be proud of who they are. A recent episode featuring actress Lupita Nyong’o was no different as they shared the importance of skin.
Presenting a moving speech during a Black Women in Hollywood luncheon accounting her own personal struggles and the importance of recognizing self worth, Nyong’o, Mexican-born and Kenyan-raised, is no stranger to being picked on for her “night-shaded skin.” The Lancome brand ambassador and People Magazine’s ‘Most Beautiful’ stood alongside Elmo as he noted “Miss Lupita’s” beautiful, brown skin.
“That’s the thing I love most about skin, Elmo,” Nyong’o said. “Skin comes in lots of beautiful shades and colors.” Together, they join in saying that they love the skin they’re in.
The 31-year-old Oscar winner’s appearance came just days after soulful singer, Janelle Monae visited the ‘Street’ to rock out with the muppets in a song performance about “The Power of Yet.”
