Fist fights, name dropping, jealousy, lawsuits and falling out with best friends is pretty standard fare in today’s reality shows. The Real Husbands of Hollywood packed all this and more into tonight’s half-hour premiere on BET. But unlike the Real Housewives or Love and Hip Hop, the on-screen “drama” was strictly comedy.
Comedian Kevin Hart stars in the “mockumentary” which pokes fun at over-the-top reality show drama. Kevin, along with married friends Nick Cannon, Boris Kodjoe, JB Smoove, Duane Martin, and Robin Thicke play themselves in the show and we watch them as they end up in fake dramatic situations (think Curb Your Enthusiasm). In the show’s premiere, Kevin gets into an altercation with a tween over a bad piece of pie, and butts heads with Robin Thicke during a poker game.
I have to admit, I haven’t laughed all the way through a black television sitcom in some time, but I had high hopes for the show and it didn’t disappoint. It was no surprise that Kevin Hart was hilarious on-screen, but it was fun to see celebs less known for their comedy, like Boris, Robin and guest star Nelly, getting laughs as we watched the “drama” unfold.
The highlight of the night for me: it gave my husband and me something current that we could laugh at on television together, which we don’t do often with TV shows. If we are looking for television comedy we typically have to turn to Netflix or repeats of Martin or Good Times. The few more recent comedies with predominately African American casts that I watch, hubby more often regards as chick flicks and opts out of. The comedy, the cast, and the situations in Real Husbands makes the show one that husbands and wives can both enjoy.
Outside of a brief glimpse of Paula Patton, none of the wives made appearances this week, but they will be appearing in upcoming episodes. I can’t wait to see what actresses Tisha Campbell (Duane Martin’s wife) and Nicole Ari Parker (Boris Kodjoe’s wife) bring to the mix.
My verdict: I enjoyed the show and will be definitely tuning in next week. Don’t look toward The Real Husbands for a moving social message or anything in depth. The show is all for laughs, and its good if you’re looking for just that.
Did you watch tonight’s show? What did you think?

i never comment or blog, but I had high hopes for some good comedy and was seriously disappointed. I’m not going to say it was good just because it was black actors. It was the worst! And the show after it second generation of wayans was a snoozer! We have too much talent and capabilities to limit ourselves. But this was unacceptable. Not being a crab or hater, simply stating the obvious. I’m going to give it a few more chances with my fingers cross!

I thought it was entertaining. I know it will get even funnier, so I will be checking in every week. I thought JB Smoove stole the first episode, he was hilarious especially his reaction over that 6-piece suit lol. Give it a chance, it’s too much talent not to be a hit.
PBS says
I don’t usually comment. But I’d have to say that show was indeed terrible, but I only commented to agree with Tiya, that the best part of the show was JB’s reaction to the six piece suit!

I thought the show was hilarious! It was a spoof of the terribleness of these other real shows and I felt it delivered. This is the first show to have me tuned into BET since Video Soul.

They should give the show a chance once watching it will get better
Penny says
It was a good idea, but poorly executed.

I watched all 3 episodes through an online site. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, but I honestly dont see this show going into a 2nd season. Far from a Hater, but there’s nothing to Love (or like) from what I’ve seen so far. I’ll give it another chance, for another episode or 2. Hopefully I’ll find some entertainment out of it.

I’m not a hater I like shit that’s excatly funny no matter who it is from world star funny videos all the way up to Kevin hart .. He has funny parts to his stand up but was never the best to me .. This show is so behind corny it’s hard to even sit Thur and watch all of it..this was a money move since he had the most hype right now he knew ppl would watch it any way jus because its Kevin hart so he wining even if it ain’t funny but season 2 is out of the question the number of ppl watching would cut in half…. Amen

I think the show is really good. It is outside the norm. It wasn’t called the fakest reality show for nothing. Yes it has a great cast of guys we love for different reasons. But I really think we as black folks set our standards too high and when it does’t reach our expectations, it’s the worst thing ever. Think outside the box and give our black shows a chance, cause we dont have many out there. AT ALL!!

I watched three shows and thought they were hilarious! I guess some people don’t get satire. It was witty and would then be silly the next second. The dialogue is not the most sophisticated on TV but it is a parody of those”Housewives Shows” so how far from the source could they go. Well done brothers!

Today, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive
a 25 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My apple ipad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share it with
someone!
