Growing up, I spent countless summer days watching my father wash and wax his car, and my mother water her rose bushes–all while records spun and music blasted out of the speakers on the front porch. My parents hummed along, sometimes reciting songs word for word. I was too young to the understand lyrics about love and loss. So, I twirled around the yard, singing off key, unaware that one day I would experience the pleasure and pain the singer spoke of. As I journeyed through life, I collected a number of songs along the way. The musical notes carried me through heartbreak to healing.
