A recent article from Black Enterprise tells the story of a young man, Steve, who upon asking his girlfriend’s father for her hand in marriage was asked to reveal items such as his credit score, medical records and bank statements.

Not sure whether to be appreciative or upset, Steve provided the requested information, fortunately with a clean record. However, what would have happened if he could not? Author Kenny Pugh writes,

“Consider this, as a father you have provided and protected your daughter for 18+ years so she can experience the best that life has to offer. Why would you extend your marriage approval to someone who hasn’t confirmed his ability to provide, support, protect and care for your daughter?”

While Pugh understands the intent behind her father’s actions, he’s not completely in agreement with how it was done. He adds that although a father should trust his daughter to make sound decisions, he doesn’t doubt that love can sometimes blind a person from making clear choices.
