Rev. Earl Baldwin Jr. of Pittsburgh was only trying to say goodbye to his step son, 23-year-old Mileek Grissom, who was shot and died at UPMC Mercy Hospital. He was the first family member to make it to the hospital and the video footage shows an emotional Baldwin over Grissom. What grieving parent wouldn’t be?
According to Baldwin, he was praying for Mileek Grissom, but the police officers were trying to pull him away “I needed to tell him, his family was going to be OK,” Baldwin explained to news outlets “I was going to do everything I could to make sure they were OK.”
Video footage shows the grieving father trying to pay his last respects, while the police officers pulls out a taser gun and uses it on Baldwin. Officers say Baldwin was interfering with the doctors as they tried to revive Grissom, but the video clearly shows no doctors or nurses around. When they tased Baldwin, a police officer even moved Grissom out of the way.
“Watch the video. Not only was the child not being treated. The child was dead,” said the Baldwin’s family attorney, Joel Sansone.
Rev. Baldwin is now filing a civil suit against the Pittsburgh Police department for this 2012 incident.
UPMC released this statement:
“Clearly this was a stressful situation and a tragic loss for this family. However, the allegations about the circumstances are inaccurate.”
