Make Sure to Have These Top Wedding Songs at Your Wedding
Thank God I married a musician who insisted on having live music and songs that would automatically fill the atmosphere with love. In retrospect, there are a few songs I regret not playing at our wedding, but there’s always our vow renewal ceremony, right? Jumping the broom this soon? Here are 10 must-have songs to play at your wedding this summer.
1. At Last by Etta James
This is a classic wedding song that’s perfect to play before the ceremony begins or for the first dance. We had a violinist play the instrumental version while our guests waited for the ceremony to begin. It is definitely one of the people’s favorite highlights from our wedding.
2. Marry You by Bruno Mars
The name and lyrics say it all. This is a perfect feel-good song that will automatically put your guests in the mood for a wedding. We had a friend sing it live, which gave us the option to change the lyrics to “Hey Nikki, Steve wants to marry you”. Priceless.
3. Golden by Chrisette Michele
“I’m so ready to love, I’m so ready to promise my all.” I’ve seen two brides walk down the aisle to this song and trust me, it’s an automatic tear jerker.
4. All of Me by John Legend
Released in 2013, this song quickly became a staple hit for weddings and is definitely on the list of the top wedding songs.
5. As by Stevie Wonder
You have to play Stevie Wonder at your wedding, you just have to. Why? Because he’s one of the greatest of all times, and please tell me what’s more beautiful than those lyrics?
6. Best of Me by Anthony Hamilton
Best of Me is one of the most popular songs by Anthony Hamilton. I can’t believe my first time hearing this song was last year at the Natural Hair Bride fashion show, here in Chicago. It’s absolutely beautiful and makes me sad sometimes because I really wish this was the song we chose for our first dance.
7. Happy by Pharrell Williams
I know you’re probably tired of this song because I was too, but nothing made me happier than seeing my bridal party sashay into the reception to this automatic mood lifter. The name says it all. The perfect song, for your perfect day.
8. An Original Song
No love story is the same, which is why my husband made an album for me entitled “Beautiful Eyes” that perfectly captures ours. My husband and Chicago artist Chance the Rapper even did an original song at our reception, that can be viewed here. Whether it’s a poem or song, an original piece is always appreciated.
9. A Couple of Forevers by Chrisette Michele
Because isn’t this why you get married? To spend a lifetime with the one you love, and even that doesn’t seem like enough, but a couple of forevers should do. Not only did I walk down the aisle to this song, but our friend, gospel singing sensation, Jonathan McReynolds sang while I walked down the aisle. What more could a girl ask for?
10. Jesus At the Center by Israel Houghton
Because it was no one but God who brought us together, every day, we strive to have a Christ-centered marriage and wanted that to reflect in our ceremony. Gospel artist Jessica Love sang this song while we performed our candle lighting ceremony, and all was well with our souls.
Here are jodie0babii’s recommendations on awesome R&B wedding songs for some chill romantic feels at the reception:
You’re definitely going to hear at least half, if not all of these songs in the next wedding you go to. If you’re planning your own wedding, consider adding some black Christian wedding songs as well. After all, marriage is a celebration of a union in God.
