Like many families, our family is busy, busy, busy in the evenings. When we get home from work or school, our evening shift begins. I have dinner to cook, the kids have homework and music and/or sports practice, and my husband is usually working (even after he gets home.)
We know the ideal situation would be for us to come home and immediately change our clothes, so that we don’t ruin them during our evening activities. But that just doesn’t happen all of the time. Sometimes (no a lot of times) we come home and the first thing we do is relax. We sit down and take a breather before getting started with our activities. And we never go upstairs to change our clothes. The kids kick off their shoes and they walk all around the hard wood floors, I start dinner, and my husband snacks while he is working on his laptop. So, can you imagine the stains that I find when I do the laundry?
Stain Removal Tips
Well, thank goodness for Clorox2® Stain Fighter and Color Booster and Dr. Laundry (Clorox’s resident stain expert Mary Gagliardi.) Check out these 3 laundry tips that help us to remove everyday stains so that we can continue to relax and be ourselves:
- Removing Grease Stains from My Favorite Pink Shirt – I pulled out my favorite pink shirt the other day, and noticed a huge grease stain on it. And then I thought back to all of the things I did while wearing that shirt (which included cooking dinner and eating.) And here’s the advice Dr. Laundry provided that helped me to get that stain right out. For smaller food-oil or grease stains on fabric, try pre-treating with Clorox2® Stain Remover & Color Booster or liquid dish washing detergent (the kind you use for hand washing dishes). Apply it directly to the stain, rub it in and then wait 3-5 minutes. Then, wash it in the hottest water recommended on the care label. Allow the items to air-dry so you can check for success, and repeat if necessary
- Cleaning My Kids Smelly Colored Socks – not only do my kids’ socks get dirty…but they also get stinky. So Dr. Laundry suggests soaking them in a solution of Clorox2® Stain Remover and Color Booster (fill the cap to line 1) added to 2 gallons of warm water. After soaking for 30 minutes, drain the soaking solution and then wash the socks in hot water using detergent and more Clorox2®.
- Cleaning popcorn butter stains – we have family movie night every Friday. In fact, popcorn is the only food that we are allowed to eat in the family room and we wouldn’t have it any other way. And of course, those little hands are grabbing big handfuls and dropping popcorn on their shirts, the couch and the floor. So to get that popcorn butter out of their beautiful colored shirts, Dr. Laundry recommends that we pre-treat laundry with liquid dish-washing detergent without rinsing the items first for a few minutes before rinsing with a little warm water. Next, wash the shirts in the hottest water recommended on the care label using detergent and Clorox2® Stain Remover and Color Booster.
Yes, I know what you’re thinking: “Why don’t you all just change out of your clothes when you get home and you will not have to worry about those stains?” Well, that’s true and false. Chances are, the kids clothes are already stained from their daytime activities. But at the end of the day, I pick my battles. And I’d rather spend a few minutes on the couch relaxing with my kids or creating memories by eating popcorn in the family room with the kids, than worrying about stains.
