In addition to February being the month to celebrate love, it’s also the month that everyone recognizes the contributions African Americans have made to the history of our country. February is ‘Black History’ month and when we normally think of black history month, they’re a few sites that always come to mind.  For example, since the dedication ceremony, the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial in Washington, DC has become the city’s most popular black history site to visit.

It is a breathtaking site to see in person and here are three more black history sites we think everyone should also visit.

• African American Civil War Museum.  Also located in Washington, DC, the African American Civil War Museum tells the stories of the US colored troops and the contributions of African Americans to the civil war through unique artifacts, photographs, exhibits and seminars. • Sweet Auburn District in Atlanta.  Atlanta is well loved for its rich and vibrant African American culture.  The city is also home to a wealth of history like the Sweet Auburn District, a mile and a half of heritage on Auburn Avenue. Designated a national historic landmark in 1976, Sweet Auburn is home to the restored birth home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ebenezer Baptist Church and the burial sites of Coretta and Dr. King.  Click here for more information on walking history tours of he city.
• International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro, NC.  See the original site where the sit-in movement began on February 1, 1960 when four North Carolina A&T College students sat down at the Woolworth counter starting a movement that would follow in other cities. The museum is also home to permanent exhibits that document other key human and civil rights struggles and achievements. For more information please visit sitinmovement.org.
