Many women have been dreaming about this day since they were children. Wearing a towel over their head mimicking a veil and wearing their mother’s over-sized shoes, little girls fantasize about walking down the aisle to meet their Prince Charming. Very rarely does the fairy tale include the intense wedding planning process and the stress that can cloud that magical day.
Here are 5 ways to make your wedding planning journey an enjoyable one for the both of you.
1) Discuss Your Vision(s) for the Wedding
Since the two of you have your own respective tastes, ideas and opinions, it is essential to be on the same page with your fiancé before any planning begins. This is the best time to exercise the art of compromising. Practicing clear and effective communication will make the process flow and serve as a good foundation for healthy dialogue in the marriage.
2) Create a Realistic Budget
No one wants to start a marriage off with debt, but it often happens. When crafting the image of your special day together, decide what you are both willing to spend. While your budget should detail each expense, don’t be afraid to estimate if you don’t have exact costs. The budget setting process will help set guidelines for future decision-making. And trust me, finding a budgeted item that costs less than the estimate is one of many small wins and a reason to celebrate together.
3) Keep Him Involved (If he wants to be…)
The decision of how much to include your fiancé should be made in the very beginning. Don’t assume or demand, simply ask him how involved he wants to be. Although you might have the exact linens, flower arrangements and colors picked out, allow your fiancé to chime in; he may surprise you. After all, it’s his wedding, too.
4) Remain a Team
We all know that the wedding isn’t just for the two of you. Your family and close friends are extremely excited about your special day and might have the urge to impose their opinions. When this happens (and it will… multiple times) stand your ground, use the word we, and stay true to your original plan. While the guests leave after a fun-filled night of dining, dancing and celebrating, the experience for you two will be just the beginning.
5) Stay Focused on Your Relationship
There’s no doubt that the wedding planning journey can be a stressful one; however, don’t let the wedding become the only focus of your relationship. Instead of constantly discussing wedding items, reserve those ‘business’ conversations for one day of the week. Continue to go on date nights. Continue to enjoy each other’s company. Concentrate on your upcoming marriage and the work it takes to build a lasting one.
Happy planning!
