Unlike many girls growing up, I didn’t think about getting married and having children. The thought didn’t cross my mind until long after college graduation. Heck, it was almost a decade later. Part of me focused on collage and career. I wanted to report the news and travel the world. Another part of me thought I would be disobeying God by having premarital sex. It’s easier to abstain if there’s no one to, well, fornicate with.
Although I wasn’t always riding the celibacy bandwagon, I did pursue a path to completion and contentment. As someone’s future wife, I want to come to the alter comfortable in my own skin, comfortable with my relationship with God and comfortable being vulnerable enough to let someone else lead me. Before I say I do, there are lots of things I must do. I’ve checked off almost everything on this list, but I continue to add items on a regular basis.
- Read the Bible–from Genesis to Revelations and everything between.
- Discover your purpose.
- Form a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Raise your self-esteem.
- Fail at something.
- Volunteer at a homeless shelter or senior citizens center.
- Babysit a child for a weekend.
- Get a passport. Get stamps.
- Start a journal.
- Go to therapy.
- Get a makeover. Get a head shot.
- Bake a cake.
- Buy stock.
- Dance in the rain.
- Skip shaving.
- Date yourself. Go to dinner & the movies solo.
- Write a business plan.
- Call off work & sleep all day.
- Take a belly dancing class.
- Write a poem.
- Become a role model/Mentor a young person.
- Write down what you want in a spouse. Then write what you can bring to the table. Are the lists equal?
Hey BMWK Fam–What would you add to the list?

This is a great list. I did all of these things before committing to my current mate, with the exception of #’s 1 & 3, because I’m not Christian. But I did find my spiritual home, my spiritual center, and I have devoted myself to cultivating a relationship with my Creator. So I guess I did those things, with some slight variants.

Thanks for sharing your list. I have done all with the exception of 11 and 17 (I’ll substitute yoga for #17).
Anyway, I would take a cooking class. I can cook rather decently, but I would like to experience a class in a culinary setting just for the fun of it. Your list reminded me to check out a local school’s website……again.
