Eighteen years ago, Sara Gibbs was among the first responders who found a newborn abandoned on a doctor’s doorstep. This fall, her adopted daughter, Janessa, will head off to college.
“I feel like it was divine intervention, it had to be because I wasn’t even supposed to be there,” Sara said.

Gibbs, a nurse in Mississippi, was called in to work at the hospital next door, though, she was supposed to be off that night. Working 12-hour shifts and never expecting to be a mother, it was then that she would meet the little girl who would soon be her daughter.
“She always tells me that whoever my mother is did it for her,” Janessa told Action News 5. “She’s the best mom ever. She’s always been my mom.”
With a baby book filled with memories, Sara and Janessa are confident that their bond will only grow stronger.
