When you’re looking for guidance in life, the Bible is always a great place to start. And it’s also a good place for men who are looking for marital direction.
Scriptures are filled with positive words of encouragement for husbands. They will help to keep you on track, set a foundation for your marriage and give you a target to set reachable goals.
There are several great marriage scriptures, however, here are seven of my favorites.
1) Philippians chapter 4, verse 8
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
How it applies to you: Everything is competing for your attention –your wife, the children, the bills, the business. In marriage use this Scripture to focus your thoughts on the good going on in your home. Focus your attention on what is excellent, true and admirable. The challenging things need your attention but they don’t have to steal your focus.
2) Ephesians chapter 4, verses 2 to 3
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
How it applies to you: What wife doesn’t want to experience the humbleness, gentleness and patience of her husband? Not only does it feel good, it promotes peace in the marriage when the spirit of love is promoted.
3) Proverbs chapter 5, verses 18 to 19
May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
How it applies to you: Awe shucks. Rejoice in the wife of your youth! Husbands if you remain intoxicated with her love, she will be sexy to you at 27,47 and even 77. The Bible encourages you to enjoy one another physically. When you’re intoxicated with your wife’s love, you’ll be in a hurry to get home at night.
4) 1 Peter chapter 4, verse 8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
How it applies to you: Understand you and your wife will fall short. Your wife may inevitably wrong, hurt or disappoint you. In those moments, hold on tight to your love for one another to drive you through.
5) 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, verse 11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
How it applies to you: Fellas, let your actions show you care. Be her biggest fan. Make time to encourage and build her up. You want her to receive that confirmation inside the home. She’ll be grateful, and so will you.
6) 1 Corinthians chapter 13, verses 4 to 8
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
How it applies to you: Husbands, this Scripture gives the best description of love. There was a popular saying some years back, “What would Jesus do?” Similarly, you can pull out this Scripture in any situation and ask, “What would love do?” Every time you will get an answer like be patient, keep hoping, don’t be irritable, be kind.
7) 1 John chapter 3, verse 18
Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
How it applies to you: This one is a great reminder that love needs to be demonstrated. “She knows I love her,” doesn’t cut it. There needs to be action that demonstrates your love. Remember when you were younger, you wanted to show your girl how much you cared. You wanted her and the world to know that she was your No. 1. KEEP THAT. I remember when I was younger my husband sent me 14 cards for Valentine’s Day. I started receiving beautiful cards at the beginning of February and every day until that special day. I know he loves me with or without those cards. Yet, the outward demonstration of his love was priceless.
These scriptures don’t leave us lacking. They offer wisdom beyond measure. They encourage us to train our thoughts by telling us what to think about. They define the attributes of love. They advise a husband to always be intoxicated by his wife’s love. Scripture even teaches us that love is expressed in deed and in truth.
They are so rich and full of life. I’m telling you they are an on-time help. Personally, they help guide my marriage every day.
Of the seven listed here, my favorite is Philippians 4:8. This scripture here keeps my mind focused. It says to think on the lovely and the admirable. In the midst of daily living, there is so much that can get you off track, but when your mind is focused on the lovely, it makes not only marriage but life much easier.
