A recent advert from Feed a Child South Africa has since been removed from YouTube after featuring a young, black boy in the same light as a dog.
A white woman can be seen feeding the kneeling child as he rests his head on her lap. He’s given another treat after bringing her the newspaper in bed and the commercial comes to a close as he licks her fingers while she cooks. The video ends with the line, “The average domestic dog eats better than millions of children,” according to a report by IOL News.
While the organization stands its ground in stating that the ad is not only effective, but true, online viewers did not hold back in their opinions of the piece.
“You could have used a real dog to emphasise this story line, not a child,” one viewer stated. “This is an untrue way of life. It reflects that white people only are the rich and suppress the African children. “I am so disgusted—you guys have no respect for the human race,” wrote another.
Feed SA director, Candice Etberg, argues for the campaign stating, “This is a great advert that highlights what is actually going on. The average dog does eat better than most children in this country,” she said. “People are ignoring the message here — and it’s that we need to get together and start feeding children.”
